Best Kept Secrets Of Los Angeles: Food, Fun and Fabric

Click HereNo One Walks In L.A., Except You

IâEUR(TM)ve designed these Los Angeles-based visitor adventures, so you can easily enjoy most of them on foot. ItâEUR(TM)s really not fun driving from place to place in L.A. traffic, so I often park the car at a Subway Station or shopping area and walk from shop to restaurant to entertainment venue. One can also arrive via L.A.âEUR(TM)s newly modernized mass transit system, but, be wary, you canâEUR(TM)t hail a Taxi in most places in L.A.; youâEUR(TM)ll have to call one or catch one at a hotel or airport.

Best Disneyland Substitute Without The Drive

Pacific Park at Santa Monica Pier is great fun for little kids and teens alike and the adults will love the beautiful weather and location. TheyâEUR(TM)ll also love the broad selection of seaside fare from upscale to beachcomber. We like Mariasol for the striking sunset, festive atmosphere and great Mexican food. The amusement park has a roller coaster, historic carousel, ferris wheel over the ocean and lots of other rides to make you lose your lunch and delight kids of all ages. Plus, there are often concerts and family events going on under the fabulous Southern California stars with a background of breaking waves.

This is my depiction of the perfect L.A. night scene, a bicyclist riding past the historic Santa Monica Pier Sign with ferris wheel of Pacific Park in the background. Check out my this and other paintings at

For Santa MonicaâEUR(TM)s version of  Downtown Disney, walk or take the Big Blue Bus three blocks to Third Street Promenade, several blocks of open-air shopping with both trendy and practical shops and restaurants, coffee shop, street musicians and a multi-plex movie theatre. YouâEUR(TM)ll find everything from architectural books to espresso on Third Street Promenade.

Mass Transit Menu

Epicurean adventurers can also eat their way across town via the Metro Subway Red Line without having to find a spot to park the car. Start for detail click here at Traxx Restaurant at Union Station for Continental Cuisine or walk across the street for Mexican food at Olvera Street. Ride the Metro to Pershing Square for High Tea at the Biltmore Hotel or continue on to Hollywood and Western for Thai or Armenian Food. At the Hollywood/Highland Station youâEUR(TM)ll have the choice of walking 3 blocks east to historic Musso and FrankâEUR(TM)s, still a viable meeting place for Hollywood Heavyweights, or a half block West to KojiâEUR(TM)s Sushi And Shabu Shabu at Hollywood/Highland Center.

Colorful Olvera Street is like a trip across the border with its authentic food and goods.

L.A. Has Fun For Foodies

When I first moved to the West Coast from New Orleans, 20 years ago, San Francisco was the only source of gourmet food and world class service, but thanks to people like Wolfgang Puck, Los Angeles has improved in spades and has some of the best Restaurants in the U.S. PuckâEUR(TM)s mainstay, Spago, Michelin star-earning Patina are a couple not to be missed, but less expensive and no less gourmet and certainly exotic foods can be found in some of L.A.âEUR(TM)s ethnic centers

Latin American. Great Mexican restaurants are everywhere in Los Angeles, so itâEUR(TM)s hard to pick the best. Monte Alban is a great source of savory Oaxacan food like Chicken Mole made with chocolate sauce, Cactus (Nopalitos) salad, or spicy Cesina Adobada (thin pork steaks seasoned in Adobo spices).

Asian. Wow! Thai, Korean, Chinese, Japanese and more are prevalent here as well. With several locations in Los Angeles, Katsuya is one of my favorites for its great Sushi Bar or table menu of traditional and fusion Japanese dishes at a great price. Find one near your vacation home at

Middle Eastern. For a casual atmosphere, try the Chicken Tarna and other Armenian dishes at one of the several locations of Zankou Chicken, YouâEUR(TM)ll have to go to Televiv or Encino, California to get the delicious 20-house salad and delicious Israeli food from Itzik Hagadol Grill.

No tasting trip around the world is complete without dining in a Moroccan palace at Dar Maghreb in Hollywood

L.A. Style

Now that your nourished and ready to go, itâEUR(TM)s time to go shopping. L.A.âEUR(TM)s garment district is the hub of the apparel industry on the West Coast, a place where designers, manufacturers and the public converge. Known for its style for a lot longer than its gourmet restaurants, Los Angeles has a diverse selection of fashion offerings.

Venice Beach. Nothing beats cruising boardwalk on a sunny day, combing the vendors at Venice Beach, looking for just that right pair of sunglasses or the latest fashion accessory at this picturesque, but urban, seaside market.

Downtown. Tailored casual and California. Find out more about veterinarian lily boynton's website page Online Jewellery wear are the norms here. You can find the look on the patrons at KendallâEUR(TM)s Brasserie on Grand Ave. or PeteâEUR(TM)s Cafe, but after lunch, venture deeper into the fashion district to Santee Alley where youâEUR(TM)ll find everything from West African dashikiâEUR(TM)s to Donna Karan knockoffs. A festival-like atmosphere and amazing bargains make this the most popular spot in the fashion district.

The Valley Girl is Now an L.A. Woman. Once considered âEURoeOver The HillâEUR where families like mine and other unsophisticated people lived, the San Fernando Valley has come into its own as a source of style and culture. Instead of Hollywood Boulevard or Sunset Strip, try Fashion Square, Sherman Oaks for the most celebrity sightings in Southern Cal and find all of your favorite upscale mall stores and a few "only in L.A." surprises.

You wonâEUR(TM)t find any department stores at Sherman Oaks Galleria but thereâEUR(TM)s plenty of great restaurants, one of the coolest movie theatre complexes youâEUR(TM)ll ever visit, a wonderful Burke Williams Spa, and, of course, some of the best people watching in Los Angeles.

Speaking of watching people go into Burke Williams, for more L.A.-centric shopping, check out Rodeo Drive, and the Beverly Center or Hollywood/Higland Center, reachable via the Metro Red Line.

Hollywood/Highland Center affords a beautiful view of the Hollywood Sign and a great combination of food, fun and fashion.

To experience the L.A. lifestyle to the fullest while on a vacation, stay at one of the HomeAway properties, located close to many of the areas I have mentioned.
